Blood Ficture and Symptoms in Workers Exposed to Benzene or Thinner

Abstract
The peripheral blood fictures and symptoms among benzene or thinner workers were studied by specific mass survey in the summer of 1976. The subjects were selected from eight industries: aluminumware product company, machine accessory maker and various plating companies etc. They had been worked for their duties 8 to 11 hours every day in their companeies respectively. The results are summerized as follows.
Among benzene workers, erythrocyte, hematocrit and hemoglobin values were almost not affected by their working duration. But the leucocyte value was gradually and markedly reduced by working duraion prolonged(P<0.05). And headache, vertigo and asthenia of low legs were more frequently appeared particulary in female workers in compair with control group (p<0.01), and were morefrequent in about one year later after biginning of their work.
Also, thinner did not affect ot reduce the value of erythrocyte but hemoglobin value showed more or less reducing tendency according to working duration in compaire with benzene workers (p<0.06).
Generally, the rate of anemia is significantly high in male workers in compair with control group (p<0.05). The value of leucocyte showed reducing tendency according to working duration by regression eqation but not significant in 5%. And headache, vertigo and asthenia of low legs appeared more frequently among the male workers (p<0.01).
I can surely recommend to use that thinner is more valuable solvent as a organic substitute of benzene having severe toxic effect. But all workers exposing to organic solvents have to use of personal protective devices such as the activated carbon-black mask and plastic gloves for defence of inhalation through respiratory tract and absorbtion through skin, respectively.
